Marble (Including Carrara, Calacatta, Statuario, Dolomite)

  • Seal before and after grouting; reseal periodically.
  • Use only pH-neutral cleaners; avoid acidic products such as vinegar or lemon.
  • Clean spills immediately to prevent etching and staining.
  • Avoid abrasive pads that can scratch the soft surface.
  • Use coasters and mats to prevent water rings and etching from acidic foods.
  • Do not use bleach or ammonia-based cleaners.
  • Wipe standing water to prevent water spots or mineral deposits.

Granite

  • Seal periodically depending on porosity and traffic.
  • Use mild detergents or pH-neutral cleaners.
  • Avoid oil-based or wax-based cleaners that can leave residue.
  • Use soft cloths and avoid abrasive powders.
  • Clean spills quickly even though granite is more resistant to staining.

Quartzite

  • Seal before and after grouting; reseal as needed.
  • Clean with mild soap and water; avoid abrasives.
  • Blot spills immediately, especially wine, citrus, or oil.
  • Avoid acidic cleaners although quartzite is harder than marble.
  • Use cutting boards and trivets to prevent surface damage.

Limestone

  • Always seal before grouting and reseal routinely.
  • Use pH-neutral cleaners only; avoid acidic and harsh chemicals.
  • Wipe spills immediately to prevent staining or etching.
  • Avoid abrasive brushes or pads.
  • Use mats or rugs in high-traffic areas to reduce wear.

Travertine

  • Seal before and after installation and regularly thereafter.
  • Understand that natural pits may open over time; these can be refilled.
  • Use soft brushes to clean textured or tumbled surfaces.
  • Avoid acids and strong cleaners that can damage the stone.
  • Use non-slip mats in wet areas due to travertine’s open texture.

Installation

Product must be installed in accordance with the current TCNA Handbook Stone Methods. Always inspect all materials prior to installation — claims will not be accepted after a product has been installed. Natural stone requires proper blending, as variation from piece to piece is inherent to all stone products. Color, veining, shading, and pattern differences naturally occur across batches and within the same order.

Performing a blended dry layout before installation is essential to achieve the best visual result. This step is standard practice in all professional tile and stone installations. Some natural stone materials may include epoxy or mesh backing, which may require the use of epoxy-based or polymer-modified thinset mortars to ensure proper bond strength. Always consult your installer or setting material manufacturer for the appropriate installation materials.

Stone must be sealed before and after grouting with a penetrating sealer and maintained regularly. Clean stone surfaces with a non-abrasive, mild, pH-neutral cleaner. Do not use bleach, acidic cleaners, or harsh chemicals, as acids from food or cleaning agents can permanently etch natural stone. Spills or tracked debris should be cleaned promptly.

Floors should be routinely swept with a soft-bristle broom, vacuumed without a beater brush, and damp-mopped after removing loose debris. Natural stones — including marble, limestone, travertine, onyx, and granite — are products of nature. No two pieces are identical. Variations such as fissures, pits, open seams, fossils, glass veins, and absorption differences are natural characteristics, not defects. These characteristics may require periodic maintenance, including resealing.

Z-Boutique makes no expressed or implied warranty for any specific end-use application. The customer is solely responsible for determining slip resistance, suitability, and ongoing maintenance requirements of the selected product. All measurements are nominal and subject to typical production variation.

  • What are the main differences between natural stone and porcelain/ceramic tile?
Natural stone is a unique, quarried material with natural variation and depth. Porcelain and ceramic are manufactured, more uniform, often more affordable, and typically lower maintenance.
  • Why choose marble or natural stone instead of porcelain?
Marble and natural stone offer unmatched luxury, natural veining, and timeless beauty. Each piece is one-of-a-kind and brings character that manufactured tile cannot replicate.
  • Where is marble most commonly used?
Bathrooms, kitchens, foyers, entryways, showers, hallways, feature walls, and high-end residential or commercial spaces.
  • Are natural stone tiles durable?
Yes, though durability varies by stone type. Granite and quartzite are extremely durable; marble, limestone, and travertine are softer and require more care.
  • Do natural stone tiles require more maintenance than porcelain?
Yes. Natural stone typically needs sealing before and after installation, periodic resealing, and pH-neutral cleaning. Porcelain requires minimal maintenance.
  • Can I use natural stone tiles in bathrooms or wet areas?
Yes, with proper sealing and maintenance. Finishes like honed or textured are recommended for better slip resistance.
  • Is natural stone suitable for outdoor use?
It depends on the stone. Granite, quartzite, and some slates work well outdoors. Softer stones like marble or limestone may not perform well in freeze-thaw conditions.
  • Why does natural stone vary in color and pattern?
Stone forms naturally over millions of years, resulting in unique veining, shading, mineral deposits, and texture. Variations are inherent and not defects.
  • Will natural stone add value to my home?
Yes. High-quality stone can elevate the look of a space and increase perceived home value, especially in luxury markets.
  • Do I have to seal natural stone?
Yes. Sealing is necessary before grouting and periodically afterward to protect against stains, moisture, and etching.
  • How do I clean natural stone without damaging it?
Use pH-neutral, non-abrasive cleaners. Avoid bleach, vinegar, acidic cleaners, lemon, or harsh chemicals that can etch or discolor stone.
  • Is porcelain a better option if I want the look of stone without the maintenance?
Porcelain is ideal for low-maintenance projects. It doesn't require sealing, is moisture-resistant, and is usually more cost-effective than natural stone.
  • Why does stone sometimes have pits, fissures, or natural veins?
These characteristics occur naturally in marble, travertine, quartzite, and other stones. They are inherent features, not defects.
  • How much extra material should I order?
Add 10–15% extra for cuts, blending, breakage, and layout adjustments. For natural stone with high variation, consider 15–20% overage.
  • Can polished stone floors be slippery?
Yes. Polished finishes can be slippery when wet. For flooring, honed or textured finishes are often recommended.
  • What is the difference between honed and polished finishes?
Polished is glossy and reflective with a luxurious shine. Honed is matte, smooth, and better at hiding scratches or etching.
  • Does natural stone stain easily?
It can, especially marble and limestone. Proper sealing and immediate cleanup of spills minimize staining risks.
  • Can natural stone etch?
Yes. Acidic substances like citrus, vinegar, or wine can etch marble and some limestones. Use pH-neutral cleaners and maintain sealing.
  • Is natural stone more expensive to install than porcelain?
Often yes. Stone installation may require specialized tools, skilled installers, blending layouts, and sealing steps.
  • How long does natural stone last?
With proper installation and maintenance, natural stone can last for decades and even centuries — far longer than most manufactured materials.

I have personally used Zicana for countertops on 2 separate occasions and both times they have done beautiful work, at fair prices. Tommy and team at Zicana were incredible to work with. At first when I was trying to get additional photos of a stone we liked from a stone company it was taking weeks and multiple phone calls. Tommy called me to check in and see if we found a stone and I told him we had been waiting on pictures. Next thing you know I had the pictures in an hour.
